At the north end of NC 12.

Why Go

The horses are said to descend from Spanish ships' stock of the 1500s and roam the sand where NC 12 ends. Tours from Corolla drive the beach to find them.

The 1875 Currituck lighthouse is unpainted brick, and you can climb it in season. The Art Deco Whalehead house stands beside it.

Tips

  • By law, stay at least 50 feet from the horses, and never feed them.
