Why Go

About 115 settlers arrived in 1587. When a supply ship finally returned in 1590, they were gone, with only the word CROATOAN carved on a post. Virginia Dare, the first English child born in the Americas, was among them.

Fort Raleigh tells the story for free. The Lost Colony play has been staged here on summer nights since 1937, and the Elizabethan Gardens are next door. Manteo's small waterfront and the state aquarium are worth a stop.
