Why Go
Opened in 1893 beneath the Reading Railroad's train shed, the market is Philadelphia's food hall. Pennsylvania Dutch merchants sell soft pretzels, apple dumplings and fresh produce beside stalls for the city's classics: DiNic's roast pork with broccoli rabe and sharp provolone, cheesesteaks, and Bassetts, America's oldest ice cream company.
Tips
- Go before noon on weekdays to avoid the lunch crush.
- Amish stalls usually close by Sunday; come midweek to Saturday for the full market.
