Why Go
Built as an 18th-century fortress, Terezín became the Theresienstadt ghetto in 1941. Some 140,000 Jews were sent here; tens of thousands died in the ghetto, and most of the rest were deported to Auschwitz and other camps. The Ghetto Museum in the town and the Small Fortress, a Gestapo prison across the river, are the heart of the memorial.
Tips
- Allow most of a day to see both the town and the Small Fortress.
