Ostia Antica

Ancient Rome's port, a whole city of streets, apartment houses, taverns and a theater, as fine as Pompeii in places and far quieter.

Getting There
The train from Porta San Paolo station, next to Piramide (Metro line B), to Ostia Antica, about 30 minutes.

Why Go

When the coast moved and the river silted up, Ostia was abandoned, and its brick streets survived. You can walk into bakeries, baths, apartment blocks and a working theater.

The mosaic floors of the Square of the Guilds show the trades and ships of the merchants who worked there.
