Getting There
About 45 minutes by train or car south of Salzburg to Werfen, then a shuttle bus, the cable car and a walk up.

Why Go

The cave runs some 26 miles into the Hochkogel mountain, but only the part near the entrance is covered in ice, formed as winter air freezes the meltwater seeping in. A cable car and a steep path lead up to the entrance at about 1,640 meters, and guided tours climb hundreds of steps through the ice halls by the light of carbide lamps.

Tips

  • Bring warm clothes: it's near freezing inside even in summer, and photos aren't allowed.
