Why Go
Cable cars have climbed San Francisco's hills since 1873, gripping a cable that runs under the street. Three lines remain: Powell–Hyde and Powell–Mason from Union Square to the bay, and California Street across Nob Hill. The Cable Car Museum, in the powerhouse where you can watch the cables turn, is free.
Tips
- Lines at the Powell Street turnaround can be long; board a few stops up instead.
- The California Street line is far less crowded.
