Getting There
A pleasant walk from anywhere in Old San Juan.

Why Go

Begun in 1539, El Morro guarded the harbor that made San Juan the key to Spain's Caribbean. It held off Drake in 1595 and was shelled by the US Navy in 1898. With the city walls and La Fortaleza, it's a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Explore its ramps, tunnels and lighthouse, and walk the lawn at sunset.

Tips

  • Bring water and a hat: there's little shade.
