Why Go

The adobe Palace of the Governors was built in the early 1600s as the seat of Spain's colony of New Mexico and is the oldest continuously used public building in the United States. Behind it, the New Mexico History Museum tells the story of the region from its Native peoples through Spanish, Mexican and American rule.

The Plaza in front is the end of the Santa Fe Trail and the city's living room, busy with markets and festivals, including the Indian Market each August.

Tips

  • Buy jewelry directly from the artists under the portal: each vendor is a member of a registered tribe or pueblo and sells only their own work.
