Why Go
António Augusto Carvalho Monteiro, known as Monteiro the Millionaire, had the Italian architect Luigi Manini build the palace and gardens between 1904 and 1910, filled with symbols of alchemy, the Templars and the Freemasons.
The Initiation Well spirals 27 meters down around a stone staircase to a dark floor, where tunnels lead out to a lake crossed on stepping stones.
