The vast Roman palace that became a town, with people still living among its columns and walls.
The emperor Diocletian built the palace around AD 300 for his retirement, as part villa and part fortress, with four gates and walls on all sides. After Rome fell, people from nearby Salona took shelter inside, and the town grew into it.
Walk through the bronze gate from the waterfront into the vaulted cellars, the best-preserved part, then up to the Peristyle, the colonnaded square at the heart of the palace, and the domed vestibule, where singers perform Dalmatian klapa songs.
