Why Go

Catherine the Great began the collection in 1764, and it now holds some three million objects, from Egyptian mummies and Scythian gold to Leonardo, Rembrandt and Matisse. The state rooms of the Winter Palace are as much a sight as the art: the Jordan Staircase, the Malachite Room and the golden Peacock Clock in the Pavilion Hall.

The Impressionists and modern art hang across Palace Square in the General Staff Building.

Tips

  • Go on a Wednesday or Friday evening, when it stays open late and the crowds thin.
