Why Go

Building it took 40 years, from 1818 to 1858, with granite columns hauled from Finland and a dome gilded with about 100 kilograms of gold. Inside are columns of malachite and lapis lazuli and great mosaics; outside, a few hundred steps lead up to the colonnade around the dome.
