Why Go

Philip II of Macedon founded the city in 356 BC, and in 42 BC Antony and Octavian defeated Brutus and Cassius on the plain below. St. Paul founded one of Europe's first Christian communities here. The site holds a theater, the Roman forum and the ruins of large early Christian basilicas, and it is a World Heritage Site.
