Why Go

Michelangelo painted the ceiling from 1508 to 1512, with scenes from Genesis around the Creation of Adam, and returned in the 1530s for the Last Judgment over the altar. The side walls hold frescoes by Botticelli, Perugino and Ghirlandaio. Conclaves to choose a new pope are held here.

Tips

  • Photos and talking are not allowed: find a place on the side benches and take your time.
