Why Go
Cast for the State House in 1752, the bell cracked and was recast, then cracked again. Abolitionists named it the Liberty Bell in the 1830s for its inscription, 'Proclaim LIBERTY throughout all the Land', and it has stood for freedom ever since. Exhibits in the Liberty Bell Center tell its story before you reach the bell itself, framed against Independence Hall.
Outside the Liberty Bell Center, the President's House site marks where Washington and Adams lived and where Washington held nine enslaved people.
Tips
- Lines are shortest first thing in the morning and late afternoon.
- You can see the bell through the glass at the back of the pavilion without queuing.
