Why Go

The museum's Greek-temple building holds more than 200,000 works: Van Gogh's Sunflowers, Cézanne's Large Bathers, a medieval cloister, a Japanese teahouse, and the largest collection of Marcel Duchamp anywhere. Outside, the east entrance steps became famous in the 1976 film Rocky; visitors still run up them and raise their arms at the top. The bronze Rocky statue stands at the bottom, to the right of the steps.

Tips

  • Run the steps early in the morning or at sunset for the best light and fewer people.
  • Admission usually includes the nearby Perelman Building and Rodin Museum on the same or next day; check the current policy.
