A marble Roman theater of the 1st century on the slope of the old town, still used for opera and concerts.
Built when the city was Roman Philippopolis, the theater held about 6,000 people, and its stage building of columns has been partly rebuilt. A landslide uncovered it in the 1960s; today its marble seats face the Rhodope mountains.
