Why Go

Rebuilt by the emperor Hadrian around AD 125, the Pantheon has the largest unreinforced concrete dome in the world. Light falls through the oculus at its top, and rain falls straight onto the marble floor, which drains through small holes.

It has been a church since the 7th century and holds the tombs of the painter Raphael and of Italy's first two kings.

Tips

  • Come early, or look in again after dark, when the square in front fills with life.
