Why Go

For centuries this valley was the center of Roman public life. Here are the Senate house, the round Temple of Vesta, the Arch of Titus and the spot where Julius Caesar's body was burned, and the great vaults of the Basilica of Maxentius rise over its eastern end.

Much of it is broken columns and foundations, so it reads best with a map or a guide. The free view over it all from the Capitoline Hill, behind the city hall, is one of the finest in Rome.

Tips

  • There's very little shade. Bring water and a hat in summer.
  • Come back to the Capitoline terraces at sunset for the view over the ruins.
