Getting There
Board line 1 at Ferrovia (the station) or Piazzale Roma.

Why Go

About 4 kilometers long, the canal winds from the railway station to St Mark's past more than 170 palaces built over six centuries. Water bus line 1 stops at almost every landing and takes about 45 minutes end to end.

Four bridges cross it; elsewhere, traghetti, plain gondolas rowed standing up, ferry people across for a couple of euros.

Tips

  • Ride it again after dark, when the palaces are lit from inside.
