Why Go

Michelangelo carved the David between 1501 and 1504 from a block of marble other sculptors had given up on, and it was moved here from Piazza della Signoria in 1873 to protect it. It stands more than 5 meters tall under a skylight, at the end of a hall lined with his Prisoners, figures still half held in the stone.

The gallery also has Florentine paintings and a hall of plaster models from the 19th century.

Tips

  • Book the first or last slot of the day for the quietest view of David.
