Why Go

Brunelleschi's dome, built between 1420 and 1436, is still the largest brick dome ever made, and 463 steps lead up between its two shells to a view over the whole city. Giotto's slender bell tower stands beside it, and across the square the Baptistery has Ghiberti's gilded bronze doors, the Gates of Paradise.

The cathedral itself is free to enter. The originals of the Baptistery doors and Michelangelo's late Pietà are in the cathedral museum behind it.

Tips

  • Book the dome climb as soon as you know your dates.
  • Cover your shoulders and knees for the cathedral.
