Times Square
The neon heart of Midtown, best after dark when the screens light up the crowds. It's in the middle of the theater district, so combine it with a Broadway show. The costumed characters expect a tip if you take a photo with them.

Why go
Where Broadway crosses Seventh Avenue, giant digital billboards light up a plaza that's busy at every hour. It's loud, crowded and commercial, and also the theater district's front door: dozens of Broadway theaters are on the side streets, and the TKTS discount booth sits under the red steps in the middle.
Tips
- Sit on the red steps above the TKTS booth for the classic view.
- Costumed characters and street performers expect a tip if you take a photo with them; agree on a price first or just walk on.
- Eat a few blocks west on Ninth Avenue rather than in the square itself.
