Why Go

Italian immigrants set up stalls here in the late 1800s, and the market still runs for blocks along South 9th Street with metal awnings over the sidewalks. Old shops like Di Bruno Bros. sell cheese and cured meats, and newer Mexican and Southeast Asian businesses have joined them. Pat's and Geno's, the rival cheesesteak stands, face each other at its southern end.

Tips

  • Saturday mornings are busiest and most atmospheric.
