Why Go

Built as the emperor Hadrian's tomb, it became a fortress, a prison and a refuge for the popes, linked to the Vatican by a fortified passage. Ramps and stairs lead past frescoed papal apartments to a terrace with a wide view over the city and the dome of St Peter's.

It meets the Tiber at Ponte Sant'Angelo, lined with angels designed by Bernini, the most beautiful bridge in Rome.
