Why Go

Venice moved its glassmakers here in the 13th century to keep fire away from the city, and the island still makes chandeliers, beads and goblets in its furnaces. The Glass Museum traces the craft from Roman times.

Its own little Grand Canal and the church of Santi Maria e Donato, with a 12th-century mosaic floor, are worth a wander.

Tips

  • Free boat trips to a glass factory usually end in a hard sell. Watch a demonstration, then shop where you like.
