Why Go

The Republic confined Venice's Jews to this island in 1516, and the word ghetto comes from its old foundry, the geto. With no room to spread out, its houses grew upward, some to seven stories.

The Jewish Museum leads tours of the hidden synagogues, and the quarter is still home to a small community.
