Why Go

The palace of the French kings became a museum in 1793. Its galleries run from ancient Egypt and Greece to 19th-century French painting, with Leonardo's Mona Lisa, the Venus de Milo and the Winged Victory of Samothrace among some 35,000 works on display.

I. M. Pei's glass pyramid of 1989 is the main entrance, and the Tuileries Garden stretches west toward the Place de la Concorde.

Tips

  • Book the first slot of the day and head for the Mona Lisa first, or leave her for last and enjoy the empty galleries.
