Getting There
The funicular from Festungsgasse, behind the cathedral, or a steep 20-minute walk.

Why Go

Archbishop Gebhard began the fortress in 1077, and his successors enlarged it over the next 600 years. It was never taken by force.

Inside are the princely chambers, with the carved and gilded Golden Hall, and a barrel organ from 1502, the Salzburg Bull, which still plays. The funicular, running since 1892, climbs from the Old Town in about a minute.

Tips

  • Go early or late in summer, when the funicular has long lines.
